Step 1: Buy or build a radio. You can purchase pre-assembled Meshtastic nodes that contain a power supply (battery and/or solar panel), LoRa transceiver, Bluetooth radio, antennas, and case. Or, you can buy each component individually to suit your needs. Hundreds of 3D-printable enclosures are available.
Step 2: Load the Meshtastic firmware. Pre-assembled nodes may arrive ready-to-use with the latest firmware. To update yours, use Google Chrome and the Meshtastic Web Flasher.
Step 3: Power up the radio and send a message. Pair the radio to your mobile phone, PC, or tablet to use the Meshtastic app or web client. Or, send a preset message directly from your radio. Some Meshtastic radios now include full keypads, touch screens, or joystick-type navigation devices that can be used to compose new full-length messages without a tethered mobile device or PC.
In many areas, the default settings apply: US/LongFast on 906.875 MHz, frequency slot 20.
#LongFast is the common public channel available on all Meshtastic devices right out of the box when operating in US/LongFast mode. (On iOS, this channel is labeled Default.)
If you see a ✓ next to your #LongFast (or Default) message, it means it was heard by at least one other node. An ⨯ or "Max Transmission Reached" message means your message wasn't received.
► In the LoRa module configuration, confirm that the country, mode, frequency, and slot are set: US/LongFast, 906.875 MHz, slot 20 -- or as required by your local mesh
► In the Channel configuration, confirm that the primary channel (Ch. 0) is called LongFast (or Default on iOS) and it is using the default encryption key AQ==
► Check that the Device role is set to Client or Client_Mute
Most Meshtastic nodes will periodically beacon a position, telemetry, or other data. It may take an hour or longer for your device to discover other visible nodes in your area.
