Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid messaging system that uses low-power LoRa radios to exchange text messages, location data, and telemetry without cellular service or the Internet; in the United States, it most commonly operates without a license under Part 15 in the 902–928 MHz band (generally called 915 MHz) or under Part 97 rules within the amateur portions of that same band when operated by licensed hams. Part 97 operation allows for increased power but prohibits both the use of encryption and interconnection with the public mesh. Increased power output has marginal benefits.
RATS members are encouraged to participate in building out the public unlicensed network for the benefit of the entire community.
Meshtastic provides encrypted, off-grid text messaging over low-power LoRa radio links, allowing users to communicate without cellular service, Wi-Fi, or Internet access. Messages may be exchanged on shared public channels or on private channels protected by a custom encryption key known only to participating users. When Meshtastic equipment is operated under FCC Part 97 amateur-radio rules, however, encryption must be disabled.
In addition to group messages and direct messages, Meshtastic can exchange location information among nodes equipped with GPS or paired with a phone that supplies its position. Users can view nearby nodes on a map, review their last reported locations, and request an immediate position update from a specific node. Position reporting can be configured for fixed installations, periodic broadcasts, or smarter updates that occur more frequently while a node is moving.
Meshtastic also supports several forms of telemetry. Radios can report basic operating information such as battery level, voltage, channel utilization, and airtime, while compatible external sensors can collect environmental, air-quality, power, and health data.

Expandable platforms such as the RAK WisBlock family can accommodate sensors for temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, air quality, light intensity, current and voltage, particulate matter, rainfall, wind, motion, and other measurements, turning a Meshtastic node into both a communications device and a remote monitoring station.
Meshtastic isn’t limited to a phone app. You can use a computer to configure radios, monitor the mesh, automate tasks, and send messages directly over USB, Bluetooth, or the network using community-developed utilities and a command-line interface.
